Thin Film

HTC applies for thin-film speaker patent

by Devin Coldewey on May 7, 2010

We’ve seen thin-film speakers around, but generally they make for pretty poor replacements for regular speakers. I mean, think about it: for bass frequencies, something actually has to move, like, an inch back and forth. I don’t care what kind of promises these gadgets make about turning your wall into a speaker, they’re just going to be completely missing out on a whole segment of sound. But what’s a device that’s never had, and likely never will have, any bass? Yes, every mobile phone ever made.

It could be that they’re just looking into it, but it really makes a fair amount of sense. Instead of a tiny “real” speaker, the whole back of the phone could be a speaker, and perhaps even double as the vibrating element as well. Sure, your music won’t sound great, but it’ll sound better than whatever comes out of that tiny-ass little thing you’ve got right now.

The method they’re attempting to patent is a way of easily mass-producing electret loudspeakers and integrating them with, one assumes, a phone chassis. They get more into the actual theoretical implementation in a separate patent.

Sure, why not?

Apple finally granted patent for iPhone’s hardware likeness

by Devin Coldewey on April 13, 2010

Every device maker is plagued by lookalikes mass-produced in the far east, and Apple is no exception. The fakes themselves, while always pretty terrible, often have looked mighty close to the real thing as far as hardware design. It only takes a single rogue iPhone to spawn a thousand exact replicas as far as dimensions, shape, and materials. Well, Apple’s taking steps to prevent this, though I somehow doubt they’ll prove too effective. They’ve been granted a patent covering the “ornamental design” of the iPhone and its pals — it better be a very specific design they’ve patented, since most phones are lozenge-shaped with big screens now.

The patents were filed in 2007 (for the iPod Touch) and 2009 (likely after the 3GS design was finalized and on the market). That’s not such a long wait, really. I’ve been waiting on a patent for my iPhone heart-replacement chest-dock for like five years now. I know, since before the iPhone came out! What can I say, I just think ahead!

What does this mean for you? Well, the chances of having your phone switched out for a fake by some sleight of hand at a bar is greatly reduced. Also, you’ll need to shut down that Apple knock-off sweatshop you’ve been running in the sub-basement of your office building. Yeah, you’ll just have to find some way to make do without it, I’m afraid.

Microsoft and Amazon sign patent agreement

Deal offers mutual access to intellectual property portfolios

David Neal

Microsoft and Amazon have signed a cross-licence patent agreement to swap access to intellectual property, including that relating to Amazon's Kindle e-book reader.

The companies said that the specifics of the deal will be kept secret, and that Amazon will pay an undisclosed sum to Microsoft.

Amazon will use the access to improve integration between Microsoft products and its proprietary and open source programmes, while also avoiding any future litigation.

"We are pleased to have entered into this patent licence agreement with Amazon.com," said Horacio Gutiérrez, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel for intellectual property and licensing at Microsoft.

"Microsoft's patent portfolio is the largest and strongest in the software industry, and this agreement demonstrates our mutual respect for intellectual property as well as our ability to reach pragmatic solutions to intellectual property issues regardless of whether proprietary or open-source software is involved."

Microsoft has signed around 600 similar agreements in recent years, including with Apple, HP, LG Electronics, Novell, Samsung and Fuji Xerox.

HTC Patents new clamshell smartphone design

 hinge1  hinge3

HTC’s engineers have been called hinge nerds, and have brought many iconic designs to market, including the Tilt of the Tilt and the amazing hinge of the HTC Universal.

Now they have patent a new hinge design that will make opening your clamshell smartphone a snap.

Read more after the break.

hinge2

The design features a torsion hinge that is held closed by magnets (212 and 232). The whole of the top of the device can be pushed forward (214 on the figure).

hinge4Pushing the top of the device forward disengages the magnets which hold the torsion hinge closed.

hinge5

The device now opens up, and the spring at 240 brings the top back to the rest position.

Now the self-opening clam shell is always pretty cool, but the best thing about the patent is that it looks like HTC is planning to make another large clam shell once again.  Maybe this means the HTC Omni will actually be revived. Once can but dream …

See the patent here.
