왜 모토롤라는 블랙베리 RIM을 ITC에 제소를 했을까?

소니 에릭스에게도 밀려 5위라는 굴욕적인 시장 점유율을 기록중인 모토롤라
최근 드로이드로 재기를 노리고 있는 모토롤라가 RIM을 ITC에 특허침해로
제소를 하였다.

갑자기 왜?
전체적인 시장점유율에서는 모토롤라에 뒤지지만
기업용 Push Email 서비스를 장점으로
RIM이 스마트폰시장에서 애플 버금가는 지위를 누리고 있다는 것은 모두가 아는 사실.
그리고 점점 그 영역을 확대중이므로 모토롤라로서도 눈뜨고 볼수는 없기 때문에
ITC 제소를 통해서 경쟁사 견제를 하는 것이 1차적인 목적
그리고 향후 특허 소송 보다 ITC 제소로 빠른 결정 및 합의를 종용하여 일정부분 현금보상을
받을 수 있는 것도 하나일 듯...

지금은 이빨빠진 호랑이 취급을 당하고 있지만 무선분야에서 모토롤라의 특허권은 방대하므로
RIM이 빠져나가기는 쉽지 않을 듯. 미국시장에서의 매출 타격을 방지하기 위해서라도
적당한 선에서 합의를 할 가능성이 커 보인다.

Motorola files US complaint against BlackBerry maker RIM

WASHINGTON — US mobile phone maker Motorola filed a complaint Friday with the US government alleging patent infringement and unfair trade practices against the Canadian maker of the BlackBerry device.

The complaint against Canada-based Research in Motion (RIM) said the BlackBerry maker infringed on Motorola's patents in key technology areas, including Wi-Fi access and power management.

"These patented technologies are important to Motorola as they allow for more comprehensive connectivity, a better user experience and lower product costs," Motorola said in announcing the complaint filed with the International Trade Commission, a quasi-judicial arm of the Commerce Department.
