“The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human,”

Swype user sets Guinness World Record for texting speed

by Greg Kumparak on March 22, 2010

Ever since Swype (an alternative keyboard for touchscreens which has users drag paths through the letters of a word rather than tap them out individually) debuted at TechCrunch 50, I’ve been asked the same question a near-regular basis: is it really any faster than just typing words the old fashion way?

Well, it’s apparently fast enough for a Guinness World Record.

Looking to play up the fact that the Omnia II comes with Swype installed out of the box, Samsung set out to find the fastest Swyper on the block. They didn’t have to look far. As luck (and logic) may have it, Swype just happened to know one of the fastest Swypers off-hand: one of their employees, Franklin Page.

Guinness gave Page the official challenge phrase:

“The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human,”

35.54 seconds later, Page had blasted out the thumb-twisted text, securing himself the record for Fastest Text Message on a Touchscreen Mobile Phone.

Alas, there’s a bit of a catch: this is a brand new record category. Texting speed records were previously all encompassing; be it T9, physical QWERTY, or touchscreen, they used to just lump it all together. That wasn’t exactly fair, so Guinness has begun to separate things out into proper categories. Page’s was the first record attempt for this category; in theory, he could have taken 20 minutes to type the message and still claimed the record.

How long do you think this record will last? Given the number of text-obsessed teens out there unknowingly training to beat this record all day, every day, it probably won’t be too long.

Windows Phone 7

Windows Phone 7 emulator hacked. Sweet, sweet secrets spill out.

by Greg Kumparak on March 19, 2010

As anyone in the history of ever who has ever written a single line of code that might be subject to hacking knows, the only way to keep something “hidden” in an application is to just not include it at all. Sure, you can obfuscate the hell out of it out in the source code, or add some crazy configuration value that enables it; just don’t expect either of those to work for much longer than 5 minutes.

Either the WP7 team didn’t get that memo, or they’re perfectly comfortable with people unlocking a bunch of features in the emulator that didn’t come enabled by default.

A gent who’s now looking to have his name removed from the project managed to tear apart the ROM included with the WP7 development tools and flip a few switches that shouldn’t necessarily have been switched. Where as the original emulator set up would only show Internet Explorer and a tile or two, the hacked ROM brings out the Live Tiles, Voice Search, and Hubs. Better yet, it shows off a few fancy new features that have never been seen, including a file explorer and a task manager.

Pocketnow has a nice little write-up on how to get the hacked ROM up and running in your own emulator – but if you’re not feeling too tinkery, check out the shots of the file manager and task manager below.

Video: This is easily the coolest thing I’ve seen an iPhone do this week.

by Greg Kumparak on March 19, 2010

You hear that sound? That’s the sound of my mind being blown.

When the folks over in Cupertino strapped a little speaker to the bottom of the iPhone and released an SDK, do you think that any of them thought “Oh, people are totally going to use this to make apps that can push little Styrofoam balls around a fake soccer field.” Yeah, probably not. But sure enough, people have.

The 99 cent app, Football – Real Kick, is a clever twist on the “blower” concept we’ve seen before. In a nut shell: sound pushes air around. Certain sounds that the iPhone speaker can emit push enough air around that you can just baaaarely feel it, making it just strong enough to blow out a candle — or in this case, blow around a little Styrofoam ball.

Unlike past blower apps, this one doesn’t emit a constant stream. It only putts out air when you tap that “kick” button; combine this with a hand drawn soccer field, a couple of iPhones, and a whole lot of beer, and you’ve got the world’s most expensive game of foosball that doesn’t actually involve a foosball table.

<> 사진출처 : unwiredview.com

Sweet merciful Jehosaphat! Microsoft stole the WinPho UI from KLM!

by John Biggs on March 16, 2010

Super sleuths at MS Mobiles (Motto: “Our small phone-shaped favicon is so outdated it’s popular again”) is accusing Microsoft of wholesale theft and battery in their new WinPho UI. KLM’s inflight whatsitcalled looks just like Microsoft’s whatsitcalled and the big blue buttons appear on KLMs entertainment whatchamacallit when you fly on their big, beautiful planes. Is it borrowing or is it theft?

Considering that Microsoft probably has the cash to buy KLM right now, I’m not too worried that this will go to lawsuit. But come on, guys. You can’t create something novel?

The Softs of Micro note that their new UI was inspired by “airports.” MSI Mobile suggests that they were really thinking of one particular airline.

$200,000 BlackBerry takes gaudiness to a whole new level

by Greg Kumparak on March 12, 2010

If I lose my phone, it’s a bad day. If this guy loses his phone, he just lost the equivalent of a CEO’s salary.

According to Brandon Chang, the ridiculous piece of absurdity you see up above is wrapped in 18 karat gold. Because that wasn’t enough, they then went and glued on 4,150 itty-bitty diamonds, ensuring that you can see just how tacky it is in even the lowest of lights.

The final price tag? $200,000 bucks. If you’ve got that sort of money to throw around, more power to you – but really, there’s a line between “impressive” and “obnoxious”, and this is a few miles past it.

Celsius Tourbillon mobile phone combines mechanical with electronic

Here’s an obvious case of conspicuous consumption. Check out the Celsius X VI II Micro-Mechanical Remontage Papillon Tourbillon mobile phone. Retail on this bad boy is going to set you back about $275,000. For a phone.

Created by French design house Celsius X VI II, this particular phone has 547 hand finished mechanical components, which makes it more of an art piece then a utilitarian gadget. When you open the phone, it activates the mechanical movement inside, which apparently winds the mechanism. It’s still a little unclear exactly what else this thing does (other then make phone calls) but there should be more details available next week when it’s unveiled at Basalworld. Regardless of what the final functionality is, it looks extremely cool. Is it worth $275,000? I leave that up to you.

Piezoelectric Kinetic Energy Harvester
A battery for an electronic device is contained within a first frame that is coupled to a second frame by one or more piezoelectric elements. The second frame is coupled to a device chassis by one or more additional piezoelectric elements. In response to translation and/or rotation of the electronic device, portions of forces induced by the battery mass are transferred to the piezoelectric elements. Electrical energy output by these piezoelectric elements is received in a power controller and can be applied to the battery. Additional device components can also be contained within the first frame so as to increase the total mass that induces forces applied to the piezoelectric elements.

Nokia files patent for kinetically-charging mobile phone battery

by Devin Coldewey on March 8, 2010

Question: can you file a patent for something that’s existed for a long time? I guess the question is of implementation. While self-winding watches and shake-to-charge flashlights already harvest kinetic energy to store and later discharge, I suppose they do it in a different way than this proposed system from Nokia. Not sure I trust something sliding back and forth in my phone, either. And wouldn’t that necessitate a bunch of empty space that could be taken up with, I don’t know, a bigger battery?

Well, I shouldn’t carp at a perfectly practical idea. How often have you been stuck somewhere with a low battery, and no outlet in sight? Shake your phone a few hundred times and you’ve gained… a couple minutes of power. And a lot of weird stares.

Indian telecom releases AAA battery-powered cellphone
by John Biggs on March 8, 2010

Olive, an Indian telecom, is releasing a phone that can be powered for a brief period using a single AAA battery. While it still has a main, rechargeable battery, this wonk-tastic phone has polyphonic ringtones, an FM radio, and a calculator! Best of all you can play Bollywood hits on it!

Obviously this is for a much different market than ours and it’s a great idea – except that stuffing a AAA battery in here is only slightly less wasteful than throwing away the internal rechargeable one and buying a new one. I suppose someone, somewhere needs this.
